Cobh

So here is the one picture I have been able to upload so far of Cobh (pronounced "Cove"). This was our destination yesterday. It is a coastal town just about 15 minutes east of our house and is pretty impressive! The huge church in the background is St. Coleman's Cathedral. Still functioning!
So this town is very quaint (although the shops could have been a little spruced up with better tourist shopping, if you ask me!) but also considerably historical. Cobh was the last port of call for the Titanic and the Lusitania. It also was the departure point for millions of Irish emigrants (and prisoners bring transported to Australia) in the nineteenth century.
Cobh was called "Queenstown" in honor of a visit by Queen Victoria until the early 20th century, so the museum here is called "The Queenstown Story". They have remodeled a train depot to include the very interesting museum, a cafe, a genealogical center, and several stores. The museum was much more interesting than we thought it would be--and also rather extensive. We enjoyed the displays about the immigrants through the luxury ocean liners. I was fascinated by the menus from all of the early steam ships. I dunno, do you think that means I'm pregnant or something! Always thinking about food!
The displays were creative and interesting; however dress warmly! This place is NOT heated! It actually felt like it was air-conditioned! We were warmer outside!!!
We enjoyed the Cobh historical area a lot and then set off in search of a place for lunch. One of the women John works with told him earlier in the week that there were no good places to eat in Cobh. After searching for the better part of an hour we discovered that she's right! Everything was closed or served just breakfast food.
So we ventured further east to Midleton and found a fantastic local restaurant/pub called "Joe's". It was John's favorite meal so far. My taste buds are acting funny so I enjoyed it but it was not the best.
So if you come and visit, chances are you'll get to enjoy Cobh. But we'll go somewhere else to eat!

But on a more domestic level. . .we finally got satellite television so we have more at-home entertainment options. Today is one of those crummy days when I feel awful (worse I have felt during my whole pregnancy--just wish I would throw up and be done with this feeling!), the weather is dreary, John is hitting people at football practice, and I plan to wear my pajamas all day and park myself in front of the tv pretty soon! But I don't feel too bad about that because we went to the gym last night (we joined a gym--very nice) and worked out. It is nice to feel like this is home. We are settling in nicely!

So enough rambling. . . I have a warm blanket and more TV channels than I know what to do with awaiting me in the living room. More to come later!
