Fun Monday: Bloggin' Environment

Yeeeeee-haaaaw! Howdy, y'all, let's get to bloggin'!!! Whoooo-eee!

Yup, I'm from Texas, and, no, I really do not talk like that. Most of the time. I just got a hankerin' because it's RODEO TIME in Houston and it's FUN MONDAY, so let's get excited!!!

So today Willowtree's topic for Fun Monday was "Your Blogging Environment". I've been trying to put up my post for most of the day, but I think Mama Drama Jenny put some bad juju on me with her post about crashing her computer because I have had "technical difficulties" all morning. But now all the demons have left the laptop and I can proceed. . .

Let me start from the beginning. . . I'm a new blogger, about June, 2006. Blogging was never intended to be any sort of outlet for expression, etc.; it was just going to be a travelogue for me and my dear hubby while we were in Shanghai for the summer. A place to post pictures and stories about kids peeing in the streets.

Of course, at the time, I never imagined that our overseas adventures would not end with China. You see, we are originally from the Houston, Texas area (I say "area" because it is just one massive urban sprawl that is larger than many countries and naming our suburb would mean nothing to you (it's "Pearland", by the way)) and now we live in Cork, Ireland for the next couple of years. And, yes, there have been some adjustments but we love it overall.

So back to the topic at hand: where I blog. Here is my little bloggy corner of the multi-purpose dining room/bar/office. I tidied up a bit after seeing other people's spaces--usually I have at least one empty cup of tea or some meal that I have been nibbling on somewhere on the desk.

And I finally removed the Kodak photo printer that I blew up a couple of months ago. That whole voltage conversion thing. . . just sad.

Anyway, it's a teeny, tiny desk, but it fits into the corner nicely and accommodates the computer, printer (down below), and a few notepads and some scissors. Don't forget the Texas coaster to show my completely obnoxious state pride. Even today someone told me that we Texans sure are a proud old bunch and our state is a whole different country. Damn, right, it is!

My screen saver shows you what's missing from my bloggin' space: my husband and our two dogs. In this lovely pic they are all three inside the pups' doghouse back at our home in Houston. My "boys" will join us over in Ireland in April once they have fulfilled the no-quarantine requirements. I cannot wait for the dogs to be here!

To my left in the blog space is a wall and the door to the living room. Pretty cramped.

If you look over my right shoulder, you get this view of our messy room. Yes, more Texas paraphernalia on the table along with lots of other junk (our taxes, for example). I can look out the window into our back yard, but there's nothing too interesting out there. Except for the days when the neighbor's dog escapes and romps around. Since I'm used to dogs in the yard (crap, is it technically a "garden"? Still learning the lingo!) it takes me a while to realize that the neighbor's dog is not our dog and that she needs an escort home (she is not a free-range dog).

We use our nice bar unit to hold up our stereo and some workout equipment and, at times, to hang clothes to dry. Our lives are not too interesting! We haven't stocked the bar since (a) I'm pregnant and drinking very sparingly and (b) we don't really "entertain". Especially since we know all of five people out here.

It's a constant struggle for me to keep posts short, so here's my attempt to end this one with no mention of my crazy day shopping for a kitchen knife and a humidifier and wanting to use the former while dealing with ornery shopowners who did not have the latter. Guess you might have to stop by again for that.

Adios.

Hey! I live in Pearland!

Small world, chica.

Sorry about the bad computer voodoo. I do that to people.

Jenny: Whoah. That kind of blows my mind, chica. We still own our house there. . . we should get together when I am back in town in March and go to Don Picos or something. And no worries about the voodoo. It happens!

Dear sabrina. Pearland? Is that, like, where pears were invented? In Sydney, I lived in Eastwood, which is where Granny Smith apples were invented. Does that mean we can be friends?

Your room is lovely and modern. Ukrainians like tassles on everything. Too bad you don't know many people yet - that's one of the crappy parts about moving! Even when I moved interstate in Oz it was hard to meet people but hey, I'm sure you'll find some good craic soon! Thanks for sharing :)

Little Miss: The best part of Pearland (other than Jenny and Stephanie from Mama Drama live there, too, as I've just learned) is that it is next to the town of Friendswood. The in-between area is Pearwood. This just blows my mind.
We didn't invent the pear, but I think all homes built in Pearland have at least one non-fruit-producing pear tree planted in their yard. At least it seems that way!
Thank you to Eastwood for the Granny Smith apple. It is the best.

That looks a nice compact area for blogging from.

How very sad you haven't met many people yet. I too found that hard when I first moved here, I hope you meet people soon. I found joining a tennis club really worked for me.

Beccy: Once we have the baby, there are tons of playgroups, etc. Everyone is very nice and we've met wonderful people so far. I'm sure we'll make more friends as we start to fit in more!

Don Pico's it is. You make the reservations, I'll buy the margaritas.

I'm drooling already, Jenny!!!

at least jenny didn't give you pinkeye.....

i use my dining room chairs as a clothes dryer, ya know for those "lay flat to dry" pieces.

I used to live in a little 2 bedroom w/4 children. Back then my 386 was right on the living room coffee table. Your compact space is perfect I'd say.

Nicole: Way to put things into perspective. . .My dining room chairs are perfect for drying sheets that the washer/dryer combo leave a little damp, too
Mary: You are a master of small spaces. Can you come over and organize my house?*

*Ticket to Ireland not included

You have a lovely workspace! Texas misses you though.
Can I come out to Pearland for a margarita? Or better yet, can I come to Cork? No quarentine necessary...I think.

Sabrina said...

Thanks, Min. My workspace needs more color like yours. I'll get to work on that ASAP. . .
Of course, you're invited to P-Land for margaritas. I'll be back in town after March 20 and I'll stalk--I mean--be in touch with Jenny about the details.
And you're always welcome in Cork!

Thanks for sharing your blogging enviroment...I just need to know, how did you end up in Ireland?

Sabrina said...

Amy: Great question! My husband's job--he's on a project where they're building a bio-pharmaceutical plant out here. Ireland was just blind luck as we were open to almost any project internationally. We actually were scheduled to move to Poland but it changed last-minute.

Very Cozy. . .

I would love to travel abroad and see the world. . .

I know it must be very hard to not know anyone and learning a culture. . .

You have made a very cosy little area for your computer. The Irish are so friendly I'm sure it won't take long to establish a network of friends and no one can resist a new baby.

I thought Pearland sounded familiar, that's where Jenny and Stephanie live.

I like the workstation, small but effective, there's seems to be plenty of room on the desk.

Don't worry about all the Texas crap everywhere, having lived overseas myself I can tell you that it's essential to have bits of home around the place.

It just occurred to me, you do come from a state that probably has the most 'state shaped' souvenirs in the world apart from NY. All my stuff ends up 'country shaped'.

Oh - that must be very hard not having the dogs with you. My husband considered a job overseas, but we both ruled against it (aging parents and leaving doggies were two reasons). But - that isn't going to stop us from visiting places!!!!

Nice blogging environment.

Karmyn, what are you talking about, you mother is not that much older that you!!! And she's only just a couple of years older than me, which is why I got all crazy when you referred to her as an aging parent!!

Sabrina said...

Shauna: We are enjoying it here--at least we speak the language! (well, sort of. ..)
Chris: thanks!!
WT: Thanks for adding me to Fun Monday and for stopping by! Now I feel like one of the cool kids.
Kamryn: Oh, the babies (um, dogs) will join us next month. Them coming with us is part of any overseas assignment. I MISS THEM!

What an adventure you're on! When are you due?? Sooo cool to get to live abroad for a relatively short period of time!

Ooooooo, and your blogging environ...looks like you have everything you need. It's especially important to have the scissors nearby (for all that cutting and pasting ;) ).

I just realized why Karmyn listed her blog like she did...Blogger's not going to let me use my TypePad ID (grrrr). Let me see if I can make a link.

Hi, Robin. Sorry for the frustration. I'm due around June 30 but at this is #1 we could have a June or July baby. Thanks for stopping by!
