If you are new to my blog, you should know that I am expecting a baby at the end of June. My DH and I decided not to learn the baby's gender, AND WE ARE PERFECTLY HAPPY WITH THIS. If it bothers you that we don't know "what" we're having (I HATE that questions--what do you think? A giraffe?) then, well, get a life.
So there are tons of "pros" to not knowing the KidZilla's gender: my favorite color is green; birth day will be a huge surprise; our home is not covered in all pink or blue yet, etc.
The only con is that we have to come up with a name for a boy AND a girl.
Boy name, no problem. We settled ages ago on "Zane" for a first name. Middle name. . .took a little more deciding--especially since we wanted something Irish if born in Ireland (Declan--isn't that cool?)--but we've settled on "Austin." Zane Austin. We're happy with that. Good, Texan, football name.
Girl name. . . .uh, like, ????? I've been headstrong that our little girl will be "Kamille" from the beginning. But the middle name. . .We've been through a whole slew of them. Even more difficult because our last name starts with a "K" so we can't have a sweet little white girl running around with the initials "KKK". Or "KOK".
Since we have no problem with a boy's name and have always talked about having boys, and I assumed we were having a boy for a long time, we are kind of sure we are having a girl now. Murphy's Law, right?
(Stiggs, we seriously need to powow so I don't end up with one of your names for Sprout. I didn't think this would be an issue, but now I'm not so sure. . it's definitely worth a trip to LaMad for some "brain food" for sure!).
Don't ask me why I've had this sudden change of heart. . .DH has thought "girl" from day one.
So I have to figure out a middle name for this possibly-chica-to-be, and I guess I'm opening things up for suggestions with the following in mind:
- both Kamille and our last name start with "K" and have two syllables; I'd like the middle name to NOT have two syllables
- last name ends with "er" so I don't want something that will rhyme (example: I love the name "Harper" but I can't handle that it rhymes with our last name)
- please no "standard" middle names--we could come up with those ourselves
- middle names we have considered and "discarded": Ireland, Eire, Aislin, Joy
I'm not offering a prize to whoever can "name my kid if she turns out to be a girl" or anything, because that is just weird. I just personally hate looking at baby name websites, etc. and thought if any of you had a cool suggestion, it would be nice of you to share it.
So that's it for my baby blog today. I totally think the kid confirmed that she's a girl. I asked for "one kick if you're a girl" and totally got one kick. We've got two whole months to pick a middle name, and middle names ARE NOT REALLY THAT BIG OF A DEAL. I know. I just sort of feel like all my "preparing" for the kiddo is incomplete if we don't even have a full name for her.
Then again, now that I'm writing this, will it turn out that KidZilla is a boy just because I've gone to all the trouble of trying to find the "perfect" girl's middle name?
I guess we'll all know if a few months. . .

Dear sabrina. Well, on a semi-irish theme, what about Niamh, or the more normal spelling Neve (pronounced Neev). After all, the baby grew in Ireland. It's not two syllables. It's not a vowel, so not KOK or KAK etc...
Okay - I'm going to be the one to say it:
Zane Austin - rhymes with Jane Austen - I've been watching all the movies lately so that's where my mind is.
Love Kamille - I think both names are "romantic" sounding.
LMM: Niamh really is one of my fave Irish-y names. Initialy would be KNK--kind of "kinky"!!! But one to keep in mind. .
Karmyn: I had never thought of that. . . hopefully little Zane won't end up very, very confused.
Dear sabrina. What about kamille with a c = camille. Then CNK which isn't anything too bad really.. Then again, any name will be construed by kids at school to be picked on. I mean, seriously, that's what kids do. So have to draw the line somewhere!
karmyn - have you seen the BBC production of North and South - not Jane Austen but 100 per cent lovely.
I'm not going to offer you names because it's such a personal choice.
I thought Dillon was going to be a girl, was convinced but had both a boy and girls name for him. I too never wanted to know the sex, I wanted a supriese on the day.
Mollie I thought was going to be a boy and we had the girls name but not a boys name. We were pacing the corridors in the labour ward trying to agree on a name. We finally agreed to buy a book if I had a boy, luckily I had a girl.
With Ben I thought I was going to have a boy and we chose the name pretty early but could bot agree on a gilrs name. As it happened that was ok but I was quietly confident that had he been a girl I would have got the name of my choice!
All our children have Irish middle names, if we had settled in England we would have given them Irish first names. Dillon is Liam, Mollie is Aisling (pronounced Ashling) and Ben is Oisin (usheen).
I'm sure you'll come up with the perfect name maybe even when she (if she is a she) is born.
Dear sabrina. I also like Grace.
We will definitely have to go over some names. We still haven't picked anything yet, but have narrowed the list a little.
You should try out the website BabyNameGenie.com. It will give you names. I tried it and it actually came up with one of the names on out list. Go figure!
As far as recommendations - I might be breaking one of your "rules" and offer some traditional choices. Something biblical or religious - Mary, Faith, Hope, Elizabeth, etc.
Hi, Sabrina. I love the name Zane Austin.
My first was a boy. We'd picked names for either gender. With my 2nd child I was SURE from day ONE that she was female. Came 6 weeks from the due date and I still couldn't settle on a boy's name. We were even tossing names back and forth while I was in early labor! But, as I knew, she was Sarah all along.
I like the name Maeve. I know you will come up with something wonderful.
I saw Grace out there.. and I was on my way to mention it.
Kamille LaRae (Sounds like LaRee)
I know you didn't ask, but you might be happier with two syllables as the cadence of her name might be easier.
Comming off of the "l" sound in Kamille, it is easy to say the L sound going into the middle name
(hee hee hee my name is Pamela Rae) just a coincidence I'm sure
I'm a horrible one to ask since poor Hailey's initials are HEL.
That being said, I've always like the name Erin. (For a girl or a giraffe.)
Beccy: your kids have great names!
LMM: thank you for the ideas. . they are certainly rattling around!
Stiggs: Baby name Geenie has some good ideas but also doesn't abide by some of my many "rules" so it gives a lot of duds with our last name. We'll chat soon!!!!
Luciluna: Thanks!
Pamela: Thank you for the suggs. too! I'm going to have to think about the 2-syllables thing. .
Jenny: Hahahaha. Actually, Erin is one I hadn't thought of but would work nicely. . .hmmmmmm. .
Sabrina, apparently I'm on a longer-than-two-syllable kick: How about Isabel or Isabella (I like "kik" for initials :) ) or Kamille Elizabeth?
Or Kamille Ivy (oops, two syllables)?
Or Kamille Bree (kind of after you)?
Okay...more than my two cents. We didn't decide my daughter's middle name until on the way to the hospital; to this day, I still love her name :).
Robin: You are totally in my head! I love KIK for initials. . .I've considered Isabel and have not discussed with DH yet. He thinks this post is totally freaky, by the way!!!
