Attic Rats vs. Garage Rats.
Think of them like the Sharks and the Jets if you will.
Except that the Attic Rats are significantly smarter than the Garage Rats.
Sigh.
Can you guess what my Great White Hunter husband was busy doing this weekend?
I talked him out of building a "rat blind" in the garage and hunting them down with rat shot (yes, they do make "bullets" (tiny pellets like a shotgun shell, really) for rats). We settled for some traps and peanut butter. Dontcha just love to stuff you learn on my blog?
Nope. The traps are working just fine. Except in the attic. Those are some darn smart rats. They figured out how to eat all the peanut butter off the trap without setting it off.
But those poor garage fellas are just falling by the masses. And they are actually kinda cute, so it's sad to see them dead in the trap.
But, no, there will be no coexisting with these critters. They've gotta go. You may think trapping them is not humane, but neither is poisoning them for them to die in the walls and stink up my house. There's really no nice way about it. They've gotta go.
How did we learn that they were such a problem? We discovered a big freakin' mouse hole next to our water heater the day we discovered we had a gas leak.
GAS LEAK???
Yup. That was fun. But CenterPoint came out within an hour and fixed the problem.
Do you know that they won't call you or ring your doorbell because it might make your house blow up? And this is from the natural gas professionals, not just a paranoid housewife.
Eek!
So in the last week. . ..two rats, one gas leak. Lots of fun!

Ick - rats! I don't even want to think about them. Hope your infestation comes to a quick end. *HUGS*
Many years ago (50's) my father worked in pest control for a while and they used to shoot rats as they came out of the grain silo pipes. I don't think he was too keen so didn't stick at it for long!
You're probably toooo young to remember the old AVON trademark/advertisement.
It was a doorbell -- and AVON CALLING.
Your post made me think of that.
As for the Rats... I hope you really mean mice.. please say you mean mice.
A rat blind! I am still cracking up :)
Our BugGuy tosses bags of poison into our attic each month. They are the kind that keep the mouse from smelling when they die.
We live in the country and if we don't keep poison in the attic and under the house we are over run with mice.
I will not do traps anymore...I can not bring myself to touch them when they have worked...ewwwwwwwww. The poison is a no muss no fuss solution that has been very effective for us.
good luck!
