Go, green baby!

Or is it "go green, baby". . .No matter how you slice it, today is Earth Today and I'm making my "big announcement". . .

So those of you who have been with me for a long time know I'm a little bit obsessed about garbage.

It all started in the fourth grade, I think, when I won an essay contest about Earth Day. That was back when "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" was a shiny new phrase.

Then we lived in Ireland where we had to pay by the kilogram for whatever we threw away that wasn't recyclable.

And once we moved back Stateside we got into high gear with recycling with the curbside pickup and the local recycling center.

You all know how giddy I get about composting, too. (But I'll spare you the current pics of the bin--it's pretty full and dirt-y in there!)

And it doesn't stop with my own garbage. . . I'm checking out my neighbors' stuff, too. Remember our neighbor with the plasma who I was gonna make my new BFF? Yeah, he's throwing a crawfish boil next weekend and guess who's invited. Uh-huh. Me!

Anwyay. . .I get really sad when I can't go for a walk on trash day and see what treasures, uh, I mean "trash" my neighbors are throwing away.

(A side note, here: Just to make things clear about my trash day ogling, I've only gone "dumpster diving" once. And it was two weeks ago. And there was no dumpster involved. Or diving. So there. But I did score a $200+ double jogging stroller (no, we have no plans to add to our family but I was sure someone could use it). And lo and behold, two days later our friends and neighbors, J and J told us that they were expecting! Yippee! The stroller is now theirs!)

One thing that has bothered me about our trash is that every week at least 1/3 of our trash is disposable diapers. I talked some big talk about switching to cloth "when Zane was 6 months old" and now he's almost 10 months old (yeah, I know, time flies).

But I finally felt the nudge.

Yup, the nudge to cloth. Thanks, Jessica, by the way! You put it out there in the universe and I picked up on it.

So my Earth Day resolution (so much better than New Years, no?!) is to reduce my disposable diaper trash by 50%.

Yeah, I'm not cutting them out all the way. I just want to work in cloth half of the time, at least.

And, boy, these are not yer grandma's cloth diapers! Cloth diapering today is C.U.T.E.--CUTE! And no pins! Other than the washing, they are almost the same as 'sposies.

So that's my big announcement AND my Earth Day pledge!

How are you going green this Earth Day? What's your ED pledge going to be?

Here Zane is posing in a pair of GDiapers (they're a hybrid cloth/disposable that's really cool). Taking a line from Jerry McGuire: You had me at "diaper cover!" I am HOOKED on how cute he looks in his new duds!

So 50% less diaper trash for our household. Starting now!

Hey, good for you! I started cloth diapering when my second son was just a couple months old. I'm now on kid #4, and I just love cloth. :o) Check out Rixa's blog, she just wrote about cloth diapering. And I actually just ran across this cool gadget today. :p

Yeah!

I am doing cloth diapers too for this new one coming. I wanted to use cloth for my other two - but the diapers weren't as accessible as they are now. (had to use the old-fashioned fold ones or a diaper service).

Of course - I will still keep disposables around for any trips we may take.

Just think - disposables haven't been around all that long (40 years?). If my grandma could hand wash her diapers in an old ringer-washer, then I can throw mine in the machine.
