Donate Life

There's a really awesome mommy/wife/volunteer extraordinaire at our church named Marissa, and she is a huge spokesperson for organ donation. Her husband, Doug, was the recipient of a liver in the '80s that saved his life. After some recent infections and crazy gooey stuff with bile ducts, etc. ("bile duct" is just a neat phrase and I wanted to say it) Doug is now going on the transplant list again for a new liver. They are so positive and upbeat and even humorous about this whole situation.
Oh, and did I mention that they have pre-school TRIPLETS?
(Yeah, any time I feel overwhelmed, I usually run into Marissa at Target with her kids (very well-behaved and always impeccably dressed, etc.) and that puts things into PERSPECTIVE, y'all!!)
So first up, if you are the praying kind, please send some prayers Doug and Marissa's way because prayer works, y'all! And get that man a new liver so he sees those three kiddos grow way up!
Next, become a donor. You can go here, Donate Life America, and do it online by state. BTW, the Texas registry has a local P-Land connection as it is the Glenda Dawson registry.
I understand that some people cannot/will not become donors because of their beliefs, and I respect that. But no reason not to if you don't have that restriction!
So become a donor! Not like you're gonna be using your corneas in the afterlife. Unless you are, and then that's cool, too!
If I had more time and energy, I'd put together some great stats about how much of a difference donors make, but I'm guessing you'd probably have about as much time to slog through those numbers as I would (none).
Just doing my part to get the word out and share HOW EASY it is to become a donor! (You can also sign up through your Department of Public Safety--at least here in TX!)
Lots of love and prayers to Marissa and Doug!

Over half of the 99,000 Americans on the national transplant waiting list will die before they get a transplant. Most of these deaths are needless. Americans bury or cremate about 20,000 transplantable organs every year. Over 6,000 of our neighbors suffer and die needlessly every year as a result.

There is a simple way to put a big dent in the organ shortage -- give organs first to people who have agreed to donate their own organs when they die.

Giving organs first to organ donors will convince more people to register as organ donors. It will also make the organ allocation system fairer. People who aren't willing to share the gift of life should go to the back of the waiting list as long as there is a shortage of organs.

Anyone who wants to donate their organs to others who have agreed to donate theirs can join LifeSharers. LifeSharers is a non-profit network of organ donors who agree to offer their organs first to other organ donors when they die. Membership is free at www.lifesharers.org or by calling 1-888-ORGAN88. There is no age limit, parents can enroll their minor children, and no one is excluded due to any pre-existing medical condition.

I have always loved how we call it the DPS, because (and this is so the history major coming out), because it reeks of French Revolution. And, we're the only state that calls it that.

Very good of you to spread the word on donation.
