(I'm picking up a topic from our first week here: the phenomenon of the Late Bar Thursday where you can party until the wee hours of the morning. You can look back to November for that post.)
So early this morning John and I had a VERY surreal moment.
At 3:30 AM our neighbors were dropped off by a taxi with a couple of giggly girls--so far this is normal and has happened every Thurs-Sat since we have been here. Here's the routine: all stumble out of the cab giggling and talking loudly, they move inside, and the dudes serenade the chicks with some guitar music. I usually fall asleep about 10 minutes into this ritual. John had never hear them before.
But this morning everyone was in rare form. They were all upstairs in the bedroom that is connected to our by a foot-thick wall of concrete and plaster. And the girls decided to stomp their feet to the music. At one point I was thinking, "that must be one hefty lass to make that much noise" and then it dawned on me: WE HAVE RIVERDANCE GOING ON NEXT DOOR! The guys were singing these Irish tunes on the guitar and the girls were dancing and clapping and stomping to the beat. It was all kind of cute. . for about 5 minutes.
Of course, John did not find this cute, as he tried to sleep with pillows shoved into each ear. I was just happy to realize I had slept through from when we went to bed until 3:30 (I've been having some problems sleeping). But after 45 minutes or so I was ready to get back to sleep. And I was disappointed because my planned blog for today, "Ode to Irish Thighs", would have to wait until I shared this. I mean, only in Ireland would you have people gaily busting out into traditional songs and dance at 4 in the morning.
After a while, John suggested we turn on the fan in the bathroom (for dissipating the steam of your shower) for a little white noise. It ran for about 30 minutes before we fell back asleep.
John says they didn't stop until 5AM. Whew!!
Don't get me wrong: we like our neighbors. We have no desire to make them change or whatever. But I'll tell you this: I am not going to feel bad AT ALL when our infant is screaming her lungs off and keeping them up nights. It's all fair in the end!
