Pancake Tuesday, Tourist Stuff, and Blog Comment Etiquette

So I totally missed out. . .yesterday was Pancake Tuesday here in Ireland. I remember hearing some snippets about pancakes on the radio while I was out and about, but no wake-up call to get my butt out and eat some pancakes.
What the heck is this all about?
Fat Tuesday, Shrove Tuesday, Pancake Tuesday. . . it's all the day before Ash Wednesday. And here in Ireland, apparently, it's the day of eating pancakes because the rich ingredients were not used often during Lent. Cool.
But, I'll warn you, pancakes here are not the fluffy, buttermilk creations from IHOP or mom's kitchen. They are crepes. And this is disappointing. Some of you might remember my New Year's post about the manta ray pancake--a product of trying to make American pancakes with Irish "pancake" mix. Despite the new coolness of posting pics of odd grocery items, I'll spare you the picture--the mix is not interesting at all and the portrayal of pancakes on the bag is SERIOUSLY MISLEADING.
Thank goodness to our family and friends who have kept us supplied in Bisquick. I never realized how much I like pancakes until they were no longer available in familiar form. Same with Kraft Mac and Cheese. But one of John's co-workers has already put in some letters to Kraft's local distributor to try to get the Blue Box on the shelves over here. What can I say, it's the cheesiest! (I swear, I had not eaten mac and cheese for YEARS until we got here and then it was the only food that would do. Pregnant lady. . )

So in trying to keep this short, here's part two: I'm coming home in a month. If you are jonesing for an authentic sheleighlee (wow, I almost spelled that right on the first try. . .), shamrock, or leprechaun paraphernalia, you'd better let me know ASAP. I am ransacking the tourist shops for Irish trinketry and if you have something in mind, LET ME KNOW! One caveat: it must be smallish and won't get me in trouble with customs or immigration.

Finally, I've come up scratching my head on this one, and now that I'm getting some more traffic by experienced bloggers (and not just my poor family who I badger into reading. . . ) maybe you can answer this. So what is the best way to respond back to a comment someone has left if you didn't see it for a few days? Sometimes I am *gasp* days behind realizing someone had left a comment--I totally want to ping them back, but do I comment on my own blog even days later? Do people check that? (Okay, so I do but I am desperate for human contact other than the three people I talk to regularly) Do I post a comment on their blog that is totally unrelated to the post?

Obviously, I'm a blogging neophyte, so suggestions are welcome.

Final note: I'm fighting yet another cold. I'm considering re-nicknaming the baby Snot Rocket because I have been a booger factory lately. With a sore throat. So tons of fluids and resting for me today. Sigh.

I'd better fire up the skillet tonight because I'm not going to let a pancake holiday pass my by. . .even if I'm a little late. . .

Ooooo....now I want pancakes and mac and cheese! Strange, but I really could eat a first course of mac and cheese followed by a second course of pancakes. I would like IHOP pancakes - Rooty Tooty Fresh And Fruity to be exact! Ahhh to be pregnant and allowed to eat strange combinations of foods. Miss you!

Mmm. Now I'm craving macaroni pancakes. See what you've done?

Personally I often get behind and don't respond for days. It happens. :)

Dear sabrina. Wow, even Australia has Kraft macaroni and cheese. Not much though, the shelves were cleaned out where Barenaked Ladies visited about seven years ago.

Re comment etiquette - let your personality guide you. I always have to have the last say (total chick, right!) so I always answer comments, no matter how buried or old they are. You're like me! I always go back and check! hee hee

Stiggs: I totally hear you. Except I always liked the nutty pankcakes from IHOP (like they were *healthier* or something). Oh, and thank you for telling me about the setting where you get an e-mail when someone comments. Duh!!
Jenny: I think you may have a new recipe that Min needs to try out on her kids. If our dogs were here and I wasn't hoarding our mac and cheese, I would make it myself. .
Little Miss: You are a fun new e-friend! I'm guessing the blue box has not made it to your shelves yet in Ukraine.

Dear Sabrina. Nope, so not in Ukraine. But we have mac. And we have cheese. I just don't have a recipe. (heheh see I had to get a final word in!)

Little Miss, I swear I am not trying to get in the last word, but I totally tried making mac and cheese from scratch (so has my Martha Stewart friend, Aimee) and we agree that for the effort, it is totally not as tasty as Kraft. Something about getting The Cheesiest in less than 10 minutes makes it that much better. . .
