Here are my afternoon tidbits:
- Thank goodness for the Continental Airlines PetSafe Desk people! They have been incredibly helpful and continue to be so. Today when I called begging for help (they don't arrange for the dogs to fly from Dublin, so this was going way out of their way) the lady was incredibly helpful and went as far as calling the cargo company IN DUBLIN to ask questions so she could help me. Got me in the right direction. I HEART CONTINENTAL!!!!
- I've been meaning to share the following website for about three months now: http://www.howstuffworks.com/ It explains just about everything, from flatulence to. . .well, everything else. My DH shared this with me a long time ago, and I think it is neat.
- I am unreasonably shocked that Kurt Vonnegut passed away. I mean, no one thought he would live forever, right? My favorite story by him is a short story called "Bagombo Snuff Box" that is part of a collection by the same name. I tried to find the story online to share with you all but was not successful.
- I've been curious about making my own dog food because the stuff we can "afford" (read: that I can justify forking over the cash for) here for the dogs is absolute CRAP, which leads to a lot of, um, CRAP in the backyard. From what I've seen online, homemade dog food recipes look a lot tastier than what I'm cooking us for dinner nightly. There is something very wrong with this. Good thing we are moving back home ASAP.
- Here are five eco-friendly things I've decided I want to do when we move back to P-Land:
- Plant a garden at the casita with spinach, TOMATOES (I HATE paying so much for the pinky, crappy ones at Kroger--puh-leez, you call that a tomato?), bell peppers (yellow and red, please, the green ones are icky), and broccoli. Understand that I have no idea if said veggies will grow in our climate, but this is what I want to do.
- Start a compost barrel. I've been geeking out about one for a long time. I have no idea why. My DH says I can find all the instructions online.
- Set up a (mosquito-proof, of course) rain collection barrell for watering the yard in the summer. Again, I've been geeking out about this since I read an article about people who use these things and how great they are. Again, instructions online.
- Really use all the recycling options in P-land. We "recycled" before but nothing like we do now. Our actual "waste" is nothing now.
- Seriously consider at least supplementing disposable diapers with cloth nappies. Seriously, there are some cute ones out there with no pins or whatever. And now that I am going back to a dryer that actually *dries* my clothing. . .I have to come up with another excuse not to.
Am I some tree-hugging, no-underarm-shaving, stinky hippie all of a sudden? No. I guess I just figure if we are going to be living back near H-Town we might as well do something, anything to try to be more green. Personally, I would love to continue using just one vehicle (it's been absolutely wonderful out here!) but I don't know if it would work.
I hope to get out of my funk of randomness soon, but I can't promise anything until Fun Monday. I have no structure or guidelines until then, so beware. And afraid. Be very afraid.
At the very least, I'm not b****ing about having to move. . .I'm sure I'll give you all your fill of that at some point.

I recycle loads too and have a compost bin, it's great just make sure you don't put meat or anything that can attract rats.
You've written so much on your two posts today I don't know where to start. Definitely get a cleaner and a packer then you can sit back sipping wine or coffee whilst the move goes ahead!
Actually - going somewhat "green" is quite easy. You are taking some good steps to start with!!! and only having 1 vehicle is tough in America - unless you live in a downtown hub. Everything is SO far away from each other.
My boys love the howstuffworks website!
You have many great ideas that are pretty do-able!
I would not use cloth diapers, though, LOL. I did try to occassionally, but they always leaked, were a big hassle (and messy) to clean, took forever to dry, etc. Maybe you can find better options than I found.
Glad you found such a nice lady at Continental--that's enough to make you smile all day!
Beccy: I think today counts as a major rant. Hoping it's out of my system soon!
Karmyn: Thanks for the encouragement! I think I prefer the suburbs to the downtown hubub, so that keeps us with the two cars right now!
Kila: Ha! It must be a guy thing! All I can do is consider trying the reusable nappies. . . I'm not committing to them yet!
Hooray for you, Sabina!!! I've been recycling for years, and still get funny looks AND compliments when I bring my canvas bags along to the grocery store. I like them SO much more than those detestable plastic bags and they are easier to carry than either plastic or paper.
I can't believe you consider this a rant. You must be really easy to live with (unless of course, you're passive aggressive).
I've had that Howstuffworks site bookmarked for a couple of years now (it's a guy thing).
I think I might have to post a rant pretty soon just so you can see what one looks like.
I ditto your comments about "green" things to do back in the states. Before we moved to the UK I thought we lived in a very recycling-friendly, green-friendly area (CT)...but let me tell you, it's nothing compared to here! And as far as growing your own veg, they should love the hot climate...just as long as they don't get sunburned.
